Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan, a major city and transport hub in southwest China, spread across the Chengdu Plain on the western side of the Sichuan Basin. Ancient Shu culture, more than two millennia of urban history and the Dujiangyan irrigation system shaped the city long before its modern expansion; the Jinsha Site, Wuhou Shrine and Du Fu Thatched Cottage make that past visible. Chengdu is also the birthplace and center of Sichuan cuisine. Panda conservation, teahouses, public parks and street food give this large metropolis an unusually relaxed daily rhythm, while its airports and rail links make it the main gateway to western Sichuan and much of the province.

This large bamboo park combines giant-panda breeding research, conservation, and public education. Different areas reveal cubs, subadults, and adults at distinct stages of life, while the Giant Panda Museum explains the evolution and protection work behind the animals' feeding, climbing, and solitary habits.
Chengdu Wuhou Shrine brings Liu Bei's tomb, the Temple of Emperor Zhaolie, Zhuge Liang's hall, and galleries of Shu Han officials into one complex. Its sequence of courts makes the relationship between ruler, minister, historical institution, and later popular memory visible on the ground.
Jinli borrows an old Chengdu name associated with Shu brocade for a modern folk district beside Wuhou Shrine. Courtyards, waterside paths, Sichuan crafts, a theatre stage, lanterns, and reflections link Three Kingdoms culture with the city's evening street life.

Memorial halls, a literary reconstruction of the cottage, Tang-period remains, poetry displays, and gardens show how the home of a poet was rebuilt and remembered for a millennium.
People's Park grew from Shaocheng Park, founded in 1911. The Railway Protection Movement monument stands alongside flower shows, a lake, lidded-bowl tea, and everyday recreation, making the park a compact view of Chengdu's modern public life.
Chunxi Road, Chengdu IFS, Taikoo Li, and Daci Temple form a layered central district. A century-old shopping street leads to a rooftop panda and then to low, open courtyards arranged around preserved buildings and an ancient Buddhist temple.
Evergreen forest, stone paths, and Daoist temples climbing the mountain create Qingcheng's celebrated atmosphere of secluded quiet. The Front Mountain follows the religious landscape through Jianfu Palace, Tianshi Cave, Shangqing Palace, and Laojun Pavilion; the Back Mountain follows valleys, waterfalls, and boardwalks.
Dujiangyan divides the Min River at Fish Mouth, releases floodwater and sediment at Flying Sand Weir, and controls flow into the Chengdu Plain through Bottle-Neck Channel—all without a conventional dam. Walking from Lidui Park across Anlan Bridge to Erwang Temple reveals the system from water level, above, and within the modern city.

Chengdu hot pot is a shared meal built around a constantly changing simmering pot. Beef-tallow broth carries chilli and Sichuan-pepper heat, while tripe, duck intestine, aorta, pork brain, tofu, and vegetables give the meal its changing rhythm and textures.
Chuanchuanxiang turns hot-pot ingredients into one- or two-bite skewers, making selection, cooking, sharing, and billing flexible. Beef wrapped around coriander, pickled chilli, or fish mint joins tripe, aorta, gizzard, tofu, roots, and greens around the same bubbling pot.
Mapo tofu combines tender cubes of tofu with crisp minced beef, Pixian broad-bean paste, fermented black beans, chilli, and Sichuan pepper. Repeated light thickening keeps the glossy sauce attached, producing heat, numbness, tenderness, savoury depth, and a crisp meat contrast in one spoonful.
Dandan noodles retain the small bowl and quick mixing style of the shoulder-pole street stalls that gave them their name. Fine noodles sit over chilli oil, soy, pepper, and a little stock, topped with crisp minced pork and fermented yacai before everything is mixed together.
Zhong dumplings use thin skins and a smooth all-pork filling, dressed with chilli oil, garlic, and aromatic sweet soy sauce for a sweet-savoury-spicy finish. The snack began in late nineteenth-century Chengdu and also has a lighter clear-soup form.
Sweet-water noodles use strands nearly as thick as chopsticks to carry aromatic sweet soy, chilli oil, Sichuan pepper, garlic, and crushed peanuts. Their chew is as distinctive as their flavour: sweetness returns after savoury, spicy, and numbing notes.
Originating in Leshan and widely eaten in Chengdu, bobo chicken cools cooked chicken, offal, beef, and vegetables before soaking the skewers in red-oil sesame or green-pepper dressing. The earthenware bowl is both serving vessel and space for flavour to penetrate.
Spicy rabbit head is braised whole and finished with red chilli and peppercorn or a five-spice seasoning. Cheek, tongue, palate, and brain each have a different texture, and working carefully around the bones makes it one of Chengdu's most recognisable braised snacks.
Ice jelly is a soft, transparent southwestern dessert. Traditional hand-rubbed versions release gel from ice-jelly seeds, while brown sugar provides the base aroma; fermented rice, glutinous rice cake, fruit, hawthorn, nuts, and small dumplings can turn it into a richly textured bowl.
