Zhangjiajie

The gateway to Wulingyuan's sandstone pillars, cloud-filled ravines and Tujia culture.

Zhangjiajie at a glance

Zhangjiajie lies deep in the Wuling Mountains of northwestern Hunan and was established as a city around tourism. Wulingyuan brought it international recognition: more than 3,000 quartz sandstone pillars rise above forested ravines where clouds move quickly between the peaks. Tianmen Mountain stands close to the urban area, while Tujia, Bai and Miao traditions give the region a character beyond its scenery. The airport, high-speed railway and roads make the city a gateway to the mountains, but the main sights spread across different districts rather than clustering around one center.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

The sandstone pillars associated with Pandora rise from deep ravines, with forested summits and fast-moving mist changing the view. Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain and Golden Whip Stream can be combined into a one- or two-day visit.

Tianmen Mountain

Tianmen Cave's 131.5-metre opening and 999 steps reveal the mountain's scale before the city cableway, winding road and summit paths connect three distinct heights. Routes A, B and C change their order.

Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon

A glass bridge about 300 metres above the floor leads into a canyon of streams, waterfalls, lakes and a final boat ride. Route B includes the bridge and full canyon, A focuses on the natural gorge, and B1 is shorter.

Fenghuang Ancient Town

Fenghuang is a one-night extension from Zhangjiajie by high-speed rail. The Tuo River connects stilt houses, docks, gates, bridges and sloping lanes, while dawn, daylight and lit evenings reveal different rhythms of the same town.

Seventy-two Wonder Tower

This contemporary night complex centres on a giant stilt-house-inspired tower. After sunset, building lights, live shows, craft demonstrations, a snack market and a bonfire square create a two- to three-hour city evening.

Dayong Ancient City

Reopened in July 2026 around Zhangjiajie's former name Dayong and the old South Gate area, this contemporary district links Hao Liu Street, Strange Market, Craft Lane and the Lishui waterfront. The public streets are free.

Yellow Dragon Cave

Yellow Dragon Cave moves Zhangjiajie's landscape underground, from paths and large chambers to dense stalagmites and a roughly 15-minute river boat. Dragon Palace and the Needle of the Sea show different scales of limestone deposition.

Baofeng Lake

The core visit is a boat ride into a high gorge, where islands, vegetation and reflections change with every turn. The lake grew from a 1970s reservoir; Eagle Nest Village adds steep paths and a cliffside walkway.

Baiyang Ancient Temple

In central Zhangjiajie, Baiyang Ancient Temple centres on Puguang Temple, founded in 1413, with surviving Guandi Temple and Wenchang Shrine. Multiple gates, courtyards and halls place Buddhist, local-belief and educational traditions in one compact complex.

Zhangjiajie Sanxiaguo

Sanxiaguo brings cured pork, pork stomach, intestine, tofu or radish together in one pot. The dry-pot version concentrates chilli, smoke and rich meat juices, while the soup version is gentler. For a first taste, order the house dry pot mild and add rice.

Zhunao Ke Cold Noodles

Tomato dressing and pickled garnishes give these noodles an appetising tang; chilli oil, garlic water and litsea oil add fragrance, while sliced pig ear supplies a crisp, resilient bite. For the classic combination, order cold noodles with pig ear and extra tomato dressing.

Haozi Baba Mugwort Rice Cakes

Haozi leaves lend these rice cakes a fresh herbal aroma and faint bitterness, while cured pork gives savoury versions a smoky richness. Steaming keeps the centre soft and sticky; pan-frying the cooked cake adds a fragrant golden crust.

Chayan Yuese Tea

Shengsheng Oolong combines peach-scented oolong tea with milk and a soft, sweet cream topping. Chayan Yuese began in Changsha and now gives travellers in Zhangjiajie an accessible taste of contemporary Hunan tea culture.
