Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang, lies on the southern side of the Yangtze River Delta near the head of Hangzhou Bay. It was the capital of the Wuyue kingdom and the Southern Song dynasty, and West Lake, the southern end of the Grand Canal and the Qiantang River still give the city its shape.
