Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang and a transport and industrial center in northern Northeast China. The Chinese Eastern Railway drove the growth of the modern city around the turn of the 20th century, leaving the European-influenced buildings of Central Street and Saint Sophia Cathedral; Harbin later became a major industrial base. The city occupies both banks of the Songhua River. Winter freezes the river and remakes its streets with snow and ice, while summer returns the focus to broad riverbanks and tree-lined avenues. Air and high-speed rail connect Harbin with the rest of Northeast China and major cities farther south.

Harbin Ice and Snow World is rebuilt each winter as a walkable city of ice. Towers, castles, Chinese-style halls and an ice train share the park with a giant ice slide, a Ferris wheel and seasonal performances. Its short operating season makes the opening and closing dates central to any visit.
Central Street is a lively pedestrian avenue distinguished by its stone paving and varied historic façades. Walk past shops and rounded corner buildings toward the Flood Control Monument and Songhua River; daylight brings out architectural detail, while lighting, food and street music change the mood after dark.
Saint Sophia Cathedral's red-brick walls, central onion dome and lower roofed wings create one of Harbin's clearest landmarks. The square reveals the whole building; inside, its high cross-shaped space, arches and exhibitions offer a different view. Events on the square and in the hall depend on the current programme.
Siberian Tiger Park combines a vehicle route through a large tiger area with a walking corridor, viewing platforms, a cub ecology hall and conservation exhibits. The changing viewpoints reveal different aspects of the animals, while displays explain the park's breeding and protection work.
Sun Island is a large riverside landscape of wetlands, woodland, lakes and paths. In warmer months, visitors can combine river views with gardens and small cultural sites; the annual Snow Sculpture Art Expo gives the island a different character in winter. Its resort history adds context to former villas within the park.
In Harbin's Chinese Baroque district, Western-style decorated shopfronts lead into side lanes and Chinese courtyard compounds. Walking from Jingyu Street into the smaller lanes reveals how trade and domestic life shared the same blocks; food shops, museums and active businesses keep the district in use today.
Yabuli spans three Guokui mountains with gentle practice terrain, competition-grade alpine runs and steeper off-piste routes. Lifts open views across snowy forest, while some seasons also offer non-ski activities. China Snow Town is a former forestry settlement transformed by deep snowfall. Thick snow caps, eaves and mushroom-like shapes cover its wooden houses; Xueyun Street, an elevated boardwalk and local-life displays show the village from different angles. Harbin guobaorou coats pork tenderloin in starch batter, fries it crisp, then quickly tosses it with a hot sweet-and-sour sauce. Vinegar aroma, a thin shell and tender pork define the first bite.

Frozen pear is a Northeastern winter fruit also found in Harbin's seasonal markets. Its skin often turns dark brown, and after thawing it can be bitten open to drink the juice or served cored and cut into pieces.
