Shanghai attraction

Shanghai Museum

Spend half a day with ancient Chinese art at the People's Square museum, then continue to nearby Nanjing Road. Shanghai Museum East is a separate Pudong venue with different exhibitions and directions.

Shanghai Museum guide

This guide covers the People's Square museum

Shanghai Museum has two main venues: the museum on People's Square and Shanghai Museum East in Pudong. The directions and admission notes here refer to the People's Square building, recognisable by its round upper form and square base. It is close to Nanjing Road, Shanghai Grand Theatre and People's Park.

Individual visitors enter through the south gate with valid ID and pass security. Temporary crowd measures can still apply.

Plan by collection, not floor count

Do not try to clear every gallery. Choose two or three areas such as bronzes, ceramics, painting, calligraphy, jade or furniture, then add a current exhibition. The permanent galleries have multilingual audio-guide options; devices and some special exhibitions may charge separately.

Popular exhibitions can still require booking

Individual admission is currently reservation-free, but that does not guarantee walk-in access on every date. The museum may restore timed booking during national holidays, school breaks or popular exhibitions. Ticketed special exhibitions have their own rules. Check the official visit and exhibition pages before leaving.
