Tian'anmen Square guide
The square and flag ceremony
Tian'anmen Gate stands north of the square and marks the approach to the Forbidden City. Security is strict and entrances change with events, so travel light and keep passports and booking records ready.

Flag-raising follows sunrise and needs the corresponding reservation slot. A booking does not provide a fixed viewing position.

The Monument to the People's Heroes sits on the central axis between the gate and Chairman Mao Memorial Hall.

Institutions around the square
The National Museum of China is free but requires a separate timed reservation.

Chairman Mao Memorial Hall has strict baggage rules. It is closed for renovation from March 16 through August 31, 2026; check again after that date.

The Great Hall of the People may close at short notice for state and political events.
