Beijing attraction

Nanluoguxiang

A busy commercial hutong street that works best as an entry point to the quieter lanes between the Drum Tower and Shichahai.

Nanluoguxiang guide

Leave the main street

The street pattern dates back to the Yuan capital: one north-south lane with smaller hutongs branching east and west. Today, cafés, snacks and souvenir shops fill the main street.

Old brickwork, calligraphy and modern shop signs sit side by side. Pick a couple of shops, then save time for the side lanes.

From the northern archway, continue through Mao'er or Yu'er Hutong toward the Drum Tower or Shichahai. Homes are not visitor attractions; do not block doors or photograph through windows.
