Start with the location of your hotel
Shanghai Pudong International Airport (上海浦东国际机场, PVG) lies east of the city, and the trip into central Shanghai is not short. Check the terminal, baggage hall and ground-transport signs before choosing a route. The fastest train on paper may still leave you with an awkward interchange at the other end.
Pudong Airport covers a large area. Use the terminal signs for your actual walking route rather than judging it from an overview image.
Metro Line 2: inexpensive but slow
Line 2 runs towards Lujiazui (陆家嘴), East Nanjing Road (南京东路), People's Square (人民广场), Jing'an Temple (静安寺) and Hongqiao. It works well when the hotel is near Line 2, the luggage is manageable and the flight lands before the last trains. The route is simple, but it has many stops and gets crowded.
A journey shown as direct may still involve waiting for another service or changing trains across the same platform. Follow announcements and platform signs. For the last train, check Shanghai Metro on the day rather than relying on an old itinerary.
Maglev: Longyang Road is not the city centre
The Shanghai Maglev links the airport with Longyang Road (龙阳路). It suits hotels in inner Pudong and travellers who can make an easy onward connection there. Longyang Road is not People's Square, the Bund or Jing'an Temple, so include the transfer and walk in any time comparison.
The Maglev has separate ticketing from the ordinary metro. Check current fares, payment methods and operating hours at the station or through Shanghai Metro.
Airport Link Line: useful for Hongqiao and the south or west
The Airport Link Line, also signed as the Suburban Railway Airport Link Line, connects Pudong and Hongqiao airports with interchange stations along the route. It is often the better fit for a connection at Hongqiao Airport or Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, and for destinations near its southern and western stops.
This is not Metro Line 2. The stations, fares, entrances and interchange rules differ. Follow signs for "Airport Link Line" or "市域机场线". At Hongqiao, check whether you need Airport Terminal 1, Terminal 2 or Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station (上海虹桥站).
The advertised train time between the airports is not a complete connection time. Baggage reclaim, walking, security and finding the next terminal all need their own margin.
Airport bus, taxi and ride-hailing
An airport bus can avoid a difficult metro interchange when one of its current stops is close to the hotel. Routes and night services change, so check the airport website or the terminal information desk after landing.
For a taxi, join the official rank. Ride-hailing cars use assigned pickup zones; confirm the terminal, floor, parking area and plate number. A car is often easier for a group, heavy luggage or an arrival after rail services stop, though traffic and the final distance control both the time and fare.
Before landing
- Save the hotel's Chinese name, full address and phone number as a screenshot.
- Compare total journey time and the number of transfers, not just train speed.
- For a late arrival, check that night's rail and airport bus services before ordering a car.
- Ignore unofficial ride offers in arrivals and use the signed taxi or ride-hailing areas.
