Yangtze River Cableway

A public bus suspended over the Yangtze

Before today's dense bridge and metro networks, Chongqing needed a more direct link across the river. The cableway opened on 24 October 1987 between Xinhua Road in Yuzhong and Shangxinjie on the south bank. Two stations, carrying and hauling ropes and opposing cabins formed a working passenger system rather than a scenic ride added later.

The carrying ropes support each cabin; hauling ropes move it between stations. Buildings and slopes fall away after departure, the view opens completely at mid-river, and dense streets return on the opposite bank. That sequence explains why an aerial line suited the river width and high banks.

River shipping, bridges, cableway and hillside roads appear as layers of one transport system.

One line connects two different neighborhoods

The north station sits in the dense Xiaoshizi–Jiefangbei district near Huguang Guild Hall and Chaotianmen. Shangxinjie connects to Longmenhao, Xiahaoli and Nanbin Road. Traveling south reveals Dongshuimen Bridge and the south-bank slopes; the return direction lets the Yuzhong skyline rise from the water.

Operating hours, ticketing and maintenance closures change. The official service channels and station notices provide the current status, while either one-way direction can be chosen to continue naturally into the next neighborhood.
