High-speed rail

China high-speed rail travel guide

Book with a foreign passport, choose the right seat and station, then board China's high-speed trains without treating an order request as a ticket.

Reading a Chinese train search

Railway 12306 groups G and C services under high-speed or intercity rail, while D identifies an EMU service. The code matters less than the actual journey. Compare the full station names, departure time, duration, transfer and final fare before booking.

Large cities have several stations, often far apart. Beijing, Beijing West, Beijing South, Beijing North and Beijing Chaoyang are separate places. So are Shanghai, Shanghai Hongqiao and Shanghai South. Put the station into a map before paying and include the journey from the hotel when comparing trains.

High-speed rail uses real-name e-tickets. A foreign visitor normally books, enters the station and travels with the same valid passport. There is no need to collect a paper ticket. An order screenshot or itinerary sheet is useful for checking the train number, but it cannot replace the passport.

Passport verification before tickets go on sale

Railway 12306 accepts valid foreign passports. Copy the English name, passport number, nationality, date of birth and expiry date from the information page. Do not drop a middle name, add a nickname or casually reverse the name order.

International traveller checking railway booking details against a passport

The system may verify the passport automatically. If it cannot, follow the prompt to upload the information page for manual review. A station ticket counter can handle verification if the online route still fails. Do this before the intended sale date. Trying to fix a name mismatch while popular tickets disappear is miserable.

Update the passenger record after receiving a replacement passport. If a ticket was booked with the old document, ask Railway 12306 or station staff what to do rather than assuming that carrying both passports will always be enough.

Five ways to buy a ticket

Method Language and payment Cost Best for Watch for
Railway 12306 app English interface; checkout shows the available card and mobile-payment options Official fare, no reseller fee Visitors willing to verify a passport in advance Initial registration takes a little work
12306 English website English purchase, change and refund tools Official fare Travellers who prefer a computer Service hours and payment choices shown on the site
Railway 12306 in Alipay Mostly Chinese; convenient Alipay checkout No reseller fee on the official service Existing Alipay users Uses the same 12306 identity record
Railway 12306 in WeChat Mostly Chinese; can link a 12306 account Check the current screen Existing WeChat users If full booking is unavailable, use the official app
Trip.com, Ctrip and other agents International interface, payment and customer support May add booking or service fees Travellers who want assistance No private ticket inventory; the railway still issues the ticket

Railway 12306 app

  1. Install Railway 12306 from an official app store and check the developer.
  2. Register, choose foreign passport and complete identity verification.
  3. Add each passenger exactly as shown on the passport.
  4. Search the complete departure and arrival station names and compare times and seat classes.

The iOS App ID is 564818797; the Google Play package is com.chinarailway.globalticketing. Several third-party apps include 12306 in their name. Check the developer before uploading a passport.

12306 English website

China Railway 12306 English handles registration, purchase, changes and refunds. The website and app share the same identity system and railway inventory. Neither has a secret pool of extra tickets.

The site is useful when comparing a long list of trains on a computer. Recheck the date, full station name and passport number before paying. Once the page confirms that the ticket has been issued, it is attached to the passport and does not need to be printed.

Alipay and WeChat Mini Programs

Search for 铁路12306 inside Alipay or WeChat and check that the service belongs to the official Railway 12306 operator. Log in or link the 12306 account, add the passport passenger, search and pay much as you would in the app.

The Alipay Mini Program is included in current Railway 12306 service rules. A Railway 12306 WeChat Mini Program and account-linking service also exist, but the visible features can vary with app version, language and account state. If the current result only handles notifications, searches or account linking, switch to the official app or website.

A Mini Program does not bypass real-name rules. Moving an order from the app to Alipay or WeChat will not fix incorrect passport details.

Trip.com, Ctrip and other booking agents

Third-party sites can be easier for English support, international payment and submitting a request before official sales open. The trade-off is a possible booking fee, service charge or optional extra. Changes and refunds may also have to pass through the agent.

Agents do not own separate high-speed rail inventory. Before official sales open, an accepted request is usually just that: a request. The platform still has to submit it to the railway. Processing or awaiting issue does not mean a seat is secured. Check the issue status, fee and refund timing.

Railway 12306 is the cleanest option once the account works. Trip.com is reasonable when English support and familiar payment matter more than the extra fee. Avoid placing non-cancellable requests on several sites at once because more than one may issue a ticket.

Sales, waitlists and busy dates

The current advance-sale period is 15 days including the travel date. Stations do not all release tickets at one national time. Use the start-time lookup in Railway 12306 for the departure station.

Golden Week, Lunar New Year, the May holiday and popular weekend routes can sell quickly. If a train is sold out, use the official 12306 waitlist. Choose acceptable trains and classes, set the fulfilment deadline and pay the deposit. The system creates a paid order if a matching ticket becomes available. An unfulfilled or cancelled request is refunded under the displayed rules.

Do not fixate on the single fastest train. A different departure hour, another station in the same city, First Class or a sensible connection may solve the problem. A reseller's paid speed-up package cannot manufacture a seat.

Seat classes

Not every train has the same set of classes. A search may also show Premium First, Special Class, sleepers or other products depending on the train and route. Treat the current booking page as the source of truth.

Class Typical layout Experience Works well for
Business Class Usually 1+2 or 1+1 The most space; some seats recline deeply and some major stations have Business lounges Long trips, quiet and a generous budget
Premium First or Special Class Varies by train Usually between Business and First, without one standard service package Compare only when shown for the train
First Class Usually 2+2 Wider seats, more legroom and fewer people than Second Longer journeys or working on a laptop
Second Class Usually 3+2 The common, good-value choice; large-bag storage can fill Most visitors and short or medium trips
No Seat No assigned seat Use permitted standing space and surrender any temporary empty seat Short journeys when the schedule cannot move

Second Class

Typical three plus two seating in a Chinese high-speed train Second Class carriage

Second Class is normally arranged 3+2. The common sequence is A B C | D F, with no E. A and F are window seats, C and D are on the aisle, and B is the middle seat on the three-seat side.

It is comfortable enough for most journeys. Seat direction may be reversed when a train turns around, so a carriage photo cannot guarantee forward-facing travel. The booking system tries to keep people on one order together, but adjacent seats are not promised when inventory is tight.

First and Business Class

Typical two plus two seating in a Chinese high-speed train First Class carriage

First Class is normally 2+2, often labelled A C | D F. A and F are at the windows, while C and D are on the aisle. The upgrade buys width, legroom and a quieter carriage. The train arrives at exactly the same time.

Individual seats and low-density layout in a Chinese high-speed train Business Class carriage

Business Class commonly uses 1+2 or 1+1, but interiors vary widely. Some seats recline close to flat. Major stations may have a Business waiting area or priority assistance, though this is not universal. The fare can be several times Second Class, so check the actual value on a short trip.

No Seat

No Seat means no assigned seat. It is not a guaranteed dining-car chair and there may be no empty seat during the journey. Some EMU services do not sell this product at all.

It can work for a short ride when the timing cannot move. It is a poor choice for a long journey, older travellers, children or anyone managing large luggage. A Second Class waitlist or a later train is usually kinder.

Station entry and boarding

For a first trip, arrive at a large station 45 to 60 minutes before departure. Add more time on a public holiday, at an unfamiliar station or when passport verification still needs attention. Ticket gates close before departure, with the exact timing shown in station announcements.

  1. Enter the correct station and complete real-name verification and baggage security.
  2. Find the waiting area or gate for the train. Do not rely only on a platform number because platforms can change.
  3. Join the queue when boarding starts. Foreign passports normally use a staffed lane with the original booking passport.
  4. On the platform, follow the carriage markings and recheck the train and carriage number.
  5. Find the seat and store luggage without blocking the aisle or doors.

Carry the original passport. A phone photo, order screenshot, itinerary sheet or reimbursement document is not a travel document. The passport is also needed to exit the destination station, so keep it within reach.

Intermediate stops can be brief. Check the bags and likely door side one stop early rather than waiting for the arrival announcement.

Luggage and life on board

The standard adult free allowance is 20 kg, and each item is also limited to 20 kg. On an EMU train, the sum of an item's length, width and height must not exceed 130 cm. The child allowance is 10 kg. Oversized or overweight baggage may need a different arrangement, so check the current consignment and station rules before travel.

Small cases fit on the overhead rack. Larger cases normally go in the storage area at the carriage end. Keep passports, medicine, electronics and valuables with you. This is self-managed storage, not an airline baggage handover.

Power sockets, USB ports, hot water and food service depend on the train model. Carry water and a simple snack rather than assuming a particular Fuxing interior. Smoking and vaping are prohibited throughout the train, including the toilets.

Changes, refunds and missed trains

An official ticket can normally be changed once when suitable inventory exists. The date, train or class may be changed, while changing the destination has stricter timing rules. A late change, a move to a later date or a change after departure can attract a fee.

The current English FAQ lists refund charges by time before departure: no fee at least eight days ahead, 5% more than 48 hours ahead, 10% from 24 to 48 hours and 20% within 24 hours. Special travel periods can alter the rule, so read the amount shown before confirming.

After missing a train, do not immediately buy another ticket. Ask at the station change counter or open Railway 12306 and check whether the ticket can move to another same-day service with space. A ticket changed after departure is generally not refundable. Agent bookings may have an earlier handling deadline than the railway itself.

Railway 12306 also has a limited free-refund rule for accidental purchases made through eligible official channels and under specific timing conditions. It does not cover every order. If the date, station or passenger is wrong, open the order immediately and check the available action.

Mistakes that cause most trouble

  • Booking by city name without checking the full station.
  • Treating an agent's submitted request as an issued railway ticket.
  • Dropping a middle name or mistyping the passport number.
  • Waiting until the station to start passport verification.
  • Carrying only a passport photo rather than the original.
  • Mistaking an itinerary or reimbursement document for a ticket.
  • Buying No Seat and expecting to keep a temporary empty chair.
  • Uploading a passport to a lookalike app or paying for layers of speed-up extras.
  • Arriving at another station in the same city without enough transfer time.
