County offices, halls, and gates explain different roles

For centuries this area belonged to Xin'an County, whose jurisdiction once connected places now divided between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The former county-government display helps locate Nantou within that larger regional story.

New uses continue the life of the lanes

Recent renewal introduced exhibitions, studios, and small shops without turning every lane into a museum corridor. The contrast is most legible away from the busiest commercial spine.

Allow time to turn into residential alleys, but respect doors, homes, and religious spaces. Venue hours vary even though the outdoor streets remain open.
